The prompt appears inside the app rather than at signup, which is why it catches long standing accounts by surprise. An account with years of history and consistent usage usually resolves without anything being asked of you.
Verifying without an ID
This is the most searched variant of the question, and the answer is more reassuring than people expect. Photo ID is the fallback of the fallback, not the default.

A face estimate is not the same as identity verification. It produces an age band rather than a name, and it runs through a third-party age assurance provider rather than being stored by the platform as a document.
If an estimate fails, the causes are usually mundane. Poor lighting, a face partly covered, or an account too new to carry useful signals. A retry in better conditions resolves most of them.

What Character AI does with your selfie
The question under every Reddit thread on this is the same: what happens to the selfie. We are not going to answer it from guesswork.
Character AI runs the check through a third-party age assurance provider and documents its handling in its own Age Assurance FAQ, under a section called Your Data & Privacy. That is where the retention period and the provider's name belong, and it is the page to read before you upload anything.
We could not read it ourselves: the help centre did not open for us. So we are not going to quote a retention period we have not seen, or name a provider on the strength of someone else's summary. What we can tell you is what the check does to your account, which is above, and that no stage of it changes the content filter.
If the upload itself is the sticking point rather than the filter, that is a reasonable place to stop. Platforms built for adults ask you to confirm you are 18 and take you at your word, which is a different trade to make.
